Description

Kabarett celebrates the synergy between Maya and Jaali, two Kvadrat textiles designed by Doshi Levien. Perceiving a sartorial quality in both fabrics, the studio began to imagine them not simply as materials, but as characters – abstract performers shaped through form, colour and movement. Jaali, a woollen upholstery fabric with an architectural presence, was used to create opaque, sculptural bodies. Maya, a light and transparent curtain textile, became their fluid dresses. As these figures emerged, each acquired a distinct personality: Tutu Girl, Parachute Woman, Opera Lady and Whirling Dervish. Together, their differing temperaments and silhouettes evoked the spirit of early 20th-century cabaret clubs – places where artists gathered to experiment and push the boundaries of free expression. Doshi Levien collaborated with Rose Pilkington, whose animation brought the characters to life.

KVADRAT KABARETT ANIMATION

Kabarett is a film that celebrates the synergy between the Maya and Jaali textiles designed by Doshi Levien. Jaali, a woollen upholstery textile, was used to create opaque and sensual tailored forms, which stands in contrast with Maya, a curtain textile that is free flowing and transparent, and which was used for these same forms’ dresses.
