Cabinet
Le Cabinet sees Doshi Levien continue its series of design objects that are in dialogue with the iconic Indian architecture of Le Corbusier. Corbusier created some of his most ambitious works in the subcontinent, where the utopian vision of post-Independence India found expression in architecture. Commissioned by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, Corbusier developed the masterplan for the new capital city of Chandigarh and designed six public buildings within it.
Doshi Levien engaged directly with this body of work, creating a cabinet as an homage to Corbusier’s architecture: a kind of offering to Indian modernism. The project extends the studio’s ongoing exploration of Indian architectural heritage, as viewed through a contemporary lens.
Le Cabinet is a collaboration with Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres in Paris, which is renowned for its porcelain production since 1740. The cabinet’s doors carry a composition of porcelain components that highlight the remarkable skills of the craftspeople of Sèvres.
