Table

Description

Roopa began with a simple idea: to make a series of tables that would complete a lounge environment. The studio had already designed the Shaal sofa for Arper, which provided a modular seating landscape, and Roopa was to be a natural accompaniment – intentionally modest in scale, but generous in expression. Doshi Levien was interested in creating an object that felt joyful in its simplicity and where every element, from the soft, deconstructed geometry to its sculpted profile, would work together to give the piece a distinctive character. The designers made the proportions such that each table could form a link between seated elements or else hold their own in isolation. The subtle play of surfaces, the matte frame and high-gloss top create a dialogue of texture and light: a small contrast that gives the piece its spirit.

The tables create a connection between the other elements in a space. The long element, shown here in blue, is designed to link two Shaal sofas placed side-by-side, and can also serve as a side table for a lounge chair.

LAYERED MATERIALITY AND COLOURS

Roopa tables are monochromatic, yet varying in texture. The polished glass top is combined with a matte frame and legs. Jaipur Pink, Midnight Blue, Deep Forest, Warm Grey: each colour of Roopa is a result of trials and exploration in Doshi Levien’s Colour Lab on Columbia Road.

ARCHITECTURAL PIECES

Combining bold architectural forms with layered materiality, Roopa tables have an iconic presence. The glossy coloured glass top, set within a matte frame and piloti-like legs, give the table a high-value, jewel-like appearance.
