The studio had already designed the Shaal sofa for Arper, which provided a modular seating landscape, and Roopa was to be a natural accompaniment – intentionally modest in scale, but generous in expression. Doshi Levien was interested in creating an object that felt joyful in its simplicity and where every element, from the soft, deconstructed geometry to its sculpted profile, would work together to give the piece a distinctive character. The designers made the proportions such that each table could form a link between seated elements or else hold their own in isolation.
